Upcoming CLARITY-sponsored Events
-
" Beyond
Tolerance: Ally-ship" workshop on March 31 will be co-facilitated by CLARITY
members with Veronica Adams, a professional training and organizational
development consultant (http://ridingthewave.net/).
This one-day program will be held at Cedar Lane, and is geared toward
European-Americans who want to learn more about what they can do to
recognize and address racism and xenophobia in its various forms in our
institutions and social systems. We'll explore ways that we can leverage
our various forms of privilege to be better allies to one another and create
environments in which true multi-culturalism and equity can flourish.
CLARITY will focus invitations to active Social Justice members, and will
include others as space allows. Please email Ariel Mora ariel_mora1@hotmail.com if
you are interested.

“Beyond
Black and White: Cultural Diversity in America” -- The next CLARITY
film discussion series through Adult Programs will present dramas and
documentaries exploring the experiences of people of color in America.
Third Fridays of the month from Feb to May 7:00 – 9:30 p.m. Films under
consideration include "Arranged" (Muslim, Orthodox Jewish), “9500 Liberty”
(Latinos, immigration issues), “Come See the Paradise” (Japanese-American
internment), and “Smoke Signals” (Native American). Each
film will be followed by a facilitated group discussion.
Other Events of Interest:
-
"Revealing the Truth: The Untold Stories of Afrodescendents” A
5-part Adult Programs series which explores the experiences of people of
African descent through compelling films and focused dialogue. Alison Moses
and Rev. Heather Janules aim to gather a diverse group of participants for
rich conversation. Every other Thursday, beginning February 9th through
April 5th 7:00 - 9:00
pm.
-
"Red
Tails", playing in local theatres now, is an
account of the Tuskegee Airmen -- an all-black World War II fighter pilot
squad. The squadron, which was sent to North Africa and Italy to escort
white bomber pilots, was awarded the
Presidential
Unit Citation in honor of their achievements. George Lucas produced
this film himself after the major studios turned it down believing that a
movie with an all-black cast would not generate a good return on investment.
-
"Fortune's Bones: The
Manumission Requiem" will premier at Clarice Smith performing Arts Center on
Feb. 25 & 26. The Fortune's Bones cantata,
composed by Dr. Ysaye Barnwell, will be performed by a full symphony, two
choirs, seven soloists and a chorus of African bells in celebration of the
fullness of African-American life. In life, Fortune was an
African-American slave who served a doctor in post-Colonial Waterbury,
Connecticut. In death, he became a medical specimen and later a walk-by
exhibit at the Mattatuck Museum, a skeleton known only as "Larry."
But Fortune was also a husband, father and human being. Together, the
artists will metaphorically set Fortune's bones to rest.
Food for Thought:
“Privilege exists when one group has something of value that is denied to others
simply because of the groups they belong to, rather than because of anything
they’ve done or failed to do. Access to privilege doesn’t determine one’s
outcomes, but it is definitely an asset that makes it more likely that whatever
talent, ability, and aspirations a person with privilege has will result in
something positive for them.”
