Henry Sgrecci conducted his first orchestral benefit concert in January, 2002 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Alexandria, Virginia, where he was Director of the Bells of Blessed Sacrament. The concert, presented for credit toward his doctoral conducting studies at the Catholic University of America, included a full orchestra, piano and vocal soloists, and the handbell choir. It was staged as a benefit for the Carpenters Shelter, Alexandria’s shelter for the homeless, which was founded by the Blessed Sacrament parish community. Over three hundred guests attended and contributed more than $3000 to the shelter.

Since becoming Director of Music at Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church, Henry has taken many steps to enhance and illuminate the music of the Congregation. With Concerts at Cedar Lane, Henry has added another level of musical excellence to our Congregation, complementing the wide range of ensembles that he leads during Sunday worship services (see Music Program).

Teaming with Cedar Lane member John Kelly, popular columnist for the Washington Post Metro section, Henry is delighted to be the catalyst for "Totally Mozart," a very special concert to benefit John’s Children’s Hospital Campaign. Bringing together a talented group of orchestral musicians who believe in our cause, showcasing our own Barbara Wing in one of her favorite Mozart piano concertos, and featuring the Cedar Lane Adult Choir front and center in the spotlight (with Thomas Guthrie at the organ console) is a dream come true. With support from the Social Justice Council and John Kelly’s willingness to let us share our community minded spirit, Cedar Laners have a wonderful opportunity at hand. How often can we hear a first rate musical performance, featuring our own friends and family, in our own home, and take advantage of a golden opportunity to help those less fortunate? It’s a win-win-win!

We’re excited to be preparing this performance. We look forward to seeing you all on January 16, 2010 for "Totally Mozart," an orchestral benefit concert for John Kelly’s Children’s Hospital Campaign!
