Partner Church Scholarship Fundraising - May 2013 Our annual scholarship fundraising drive for our Partner Church congregation in Dicsöszentmárton, located in the part of Romania known as Transylvania, has begun! Over the past 10 years the generosity of Cedar Lane members has made the dream of attending university a feasible option for dozens of young people in the Dicsö community, enabling them to go on to become doctors, financial advisors, engineers, teachers, and social workers -- professions that are desperately needed in the transitioning Romanian economy. Although tuition in Romanian universities is free or minimal for students who score highly enough on the admission tests – as have the students we are sponsoring this year – the cost of living in the university cities has risen markedly, and it is increasingly difficult for their families to afford their room and board, their books, and transportation expenses. Contributions of any size will be gratefully accepted at any time throughout the summer – simply mail or drop off a check to the church office. Checks should be made out to CLUUC with “Partner Church Scholarships” in the memo line. Below are profiles of two of the students we are sponsoring this year. We’ll feature the rest of scholars in the eNews over the next few weeks.
Emese Fülöp is in her third year studying economics or, as she says, “more exactly marketing”. She aspires to work in this field after graduation and to be a confident and self-dependent woman. She hopes that her success at University and in the future will reflect well on the high school where she “learned so much about life” (Janos Zsigmond Unitarian high school), and that “by managing to be a woman with success, I will make my family proud, I want them to see, that by sending me to Kolozsvar to have a good education was worth it.”
Csifo Ferecz-Szilard is one of our new students this year. He is studying Geography and tourism. He would like to develop a “healthy tourism” business for some of Transylvania’s small villages after he graduates. He writes that the scholarship from Cedar Lane “is a good start for my dream and I would be grateful for acceptance.”
