Sunday’s activities From the Ministers Music Notes Education for all Ages Upcoming Sundays Around the Church Auction Committee Social Justice Council Beyond Cedar Lane Calendar
Service this Sunday 9 & 11 a.m. March 14, 2010
March 14, 2010 Paul and Vicky Strella were the high bidders on the offer to pick a sermon title at last year's auction. The full title of the sermon is something like this: "How Do You Decide When You Are Doing Enough Good and How Do You Deal with the Feeling That You Are a Chump When Other People Appear to be Cheating, Getting Rich, Cutting in Line, and Getting Away with it? (Every time I schedule this sermon it snows. We’ll see what happens this time.) SEQ CHAPTER \h \r 1 Forum: Keeping Agriculture Local. Montgomery County produces more than $120 million annually in commercial horticulture, including: landscape, nursery, greenhouse, turf and garden center industries, as well as commercial fruit and vegetable production. Chuck Schuster, Extension Service educator, and horticulturist, will talk about why it is important for us to maintain this growing industry. Music Notes: This morning’s Call to Worship, “Bwana Awabariki” is a Swahili blessing song. At the end of each refrain the cantor will interject prayers for fairness, underscoring today’s sermon. During the Offertory the Adult Choir sings the classic ballad, “O Danny Boy,” also known as “Londonderry Air,” in anticipation of St. Patrick’s Day on March 17. The Choir will also sing portions of the Gloria from Giacomo Puccini’s “Messa de Gloria.” Puccini was a relatively young man when he completed his “Messa a quattro voci” in 1880, ironically, as his final graduation project from the Istituto Musicale Pacini. The lyric quality of the vocal lines, coupled with the dramatic dynamism of the orchestral accompaniment (ably performed at the piano by Thomas Guthrie) foreshadow the composer’s ultimate distinction as a renowned composer of operas. Welcome, Visitors to Cedar Lane. We invite you to stop by our Visitors Center in the Lounge service to say hello, find out more about Cedar Lane and Unitarian Universalism, sign up for our mailing list, and/or pick up pamphlets about our faith. This is a friendly invitation and reminder that we will be holding a Membership Signing Ceremony this Sunday (March 14). While one can sign the membership book at anytime time during the week, we usually set aside the second Sunday of the month as a time for our somewhat formalized process of joining Cedar Lane by signing the membership book during a small ceremony in the church library, with at least one minister present along with members from the Board of Trustees and the Member Services Committee on hand to help celebrate. We have rescheduled February's signing ceremony to this Sunday due to the recent weather-related interruptions to our regular Sunday worship. So if you have been visiting for a while and feel ready to join with us in our unfolding quest, I invite you to join us in the library following each service for a signing ceremony. If you have questions about the responsibilities of membership within Cedar Lane, I invite you to contact Andy Streich, our Membership Coordinator, at astreich@cedarlane.org or 301-493-8300, or Lisa Chernikoff, Member Services Committee Co-Chair, at lisa.chernikoff@verizon.net or 301-587-5992. Please contact the church directly at 301-493-8300 if you prefer to speak to one of our ministers. IN THE LOUNGE- ◊ Alliance Books ◊ Auction Committee ◊ Donuts and Bagels ◊ Environmental Task Force ◊ Social Justice Council Lounge Lizards ◊ UU Book Store- Beacon Press and Skinner House- Now with Gift Corner candles ◊ We serve fair trade coffee, hot chocolate, and tea ◊
Volunteers for the Service:
Roger Fritts First a reminder: I encourage you to come to our auction this Saturday, March 13 at 6:00 P.M. Sometimes people ask me “What do you do during the week?” Thursday of this week I will be speaking to the Unitarian Universalists who live at Asbury Methodist village, something I have done several times over the years. I have also spoken at Collington Episcopal Life Care Community, Leisure World of Maryland, and Riderwood (the name reminds me of a place in Tolkien’s Middle-Earth). All of them have merit and I do not recommend one over the other. The number of such facilities in the area reflects both the financial stability of Federal pensions and the good weather we have in the Washington Area (most of the time). When I served as a minister in Evanston, Illinois I noted that many Unitarian Universalists moved to Florida or Arizona when they retired, due to Chicago’s cold winters. I always wonder what to preach about when I am invited to come and speak. What sermon topics speak to people living in a retirement community? And are some more humanistic and others more theistic? A few years ago the same sermon on Thanksgiving that was a big hit at Leisure World seem to put people to sleep at Riderwood. These are the sorts of things ministers think about. At Asbury next Thursday I will share my Feb. 15, 2009 sermon on “Lincoln’s Religion” because I love history and this sermon is my personal favorite from the past year. http://www.cedarlane.org/serm_09.html I am looking forward to it.
Music Notes from the Director of Music What’s in a “Prelude?” Musical preludes are intended to prepare us for worship through a few moments of undisturbed reflection prior to the beginning of the service. The music is chosen to compliment the theme of the morning and our musicians work diligently to prepare their selections. So that all may enjoy the music, please create an environment of quiet reflection, without speaking, once the music begins. Thank you. March 14 - During this service we celebrate the coming of St. Patrick’s Day and sing the music of Puccini! The Adult Choir leads our musical worship, singing Antonio Lotti’s motet Miserere Mei (Grant Us Thy Mercy) as the Call to Worship. The Choir will sing O Danny Boy in four part harmony during the Offertory. The morning’s anthem will be a portion of Gloria from Giacomo Puccini’s grand “Messa di Gloria.

Sunday Morning Forum
March 21, 2010 March 21 Forum: Crossway Community: Providing Housing, Childcare, and Education for Single-Parent Families. Kathleen Guinan, CEO (with husband Ed November 2008 WETA Hometown Heroes) will discuss this initiative created in 1990 to provide low-income mothers with educational opportunities while at the same time providing child-care options. Crossway acts to combine the best aspects of homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters and transitional housing programs into an environment that fosters community learning. The public/private partnerships built by the Crossway Community is a model of how regional governments can support the creation of innovative and community-serving initiatives. Come hear Kathleen's latest success stories of this worthy organization, supported by our own Alliance. March 28, 2010 “To Wander and To Find” The Rev. Heather Janules In the Passover story, eternal themes of departure, wandering and arriving invite us to consider what it means to leave and discover home. This service will reflect on the shared experiences of wandering and arriving in life, on letting go of the familiar for something new and on the faith it requires to live in the desert for a time. March 28 Forum: Finding a New Way Forward in Afghanistan. Afghanistan is a country, but it is not a nation as it is composed of four distinct national groups. Three are tied by ethnicity and/or religion to one of the country's neighbors and divided from the fourth by Hindu Kush; the fourth is a collection of loosely confederated tribes. Just as it did not work in Viet Nam or Algeria, General McChrystal's "new" counterinsurgency of "clear, hold, build" is unlikely to work because it cannot be executed on behalf of another government (particularly a weak, corrupt government) by a foreign army. Also, the Muslim world does not want the United States to be its savior; or to be "Westernized " through military occupation regardless of the material benefits American-led Westernization offers. Dr. Douglas Macgregor, retired army colonel, will elaborate on why he believes it would be best for us to withdraw from Afghanistan.

India Scribner, the amazing sophomore at BCC who organized the fundraiser recently held in the Chalice House to help combat cancer in Uganda, East Africa, reports: I have added up ALL of the donations I received for Wrap Up Africa and Bead for Life. I received $738 in donations and sold $399 worth of clothes, all for Wrap Up Africa! That put me $337 over my original goal of $800! I also sold $780 worth of Bead for Life jewelry. Thank you again to those that helped make my event possible. And thank you to all of you for donating to an important cause that means so much to me. India
