Service this Sunday                                   9 & 11 a.m.                        Sunday, April 11, 2010

April 11, 2010
“Why Do I Say ‘Eternal God’?”

Rev. Ken MacLean

It has often been my custom to have a prayer as a central part of the Sunday morning service, and I usually begin the prayer with "Eternal God." Since I do not follow all of the old bishop's advice to the young cleric who asked, "What should I preach about?" and the bishop responded, "Preach about God and about twenty minutes," some people have wondered why I begin this way.

Kenneth Torquil MacLean was minister of Cedar Lane from 1972 to 1992. This year he will speak at the UUMA worship service for the ministers who were ordained fifty years ago. He will also be Minister of the Week at the Star Island International Affairs Conference. He is minister of the Church of the Desert in Rancho Mirage, California.

The Annual Meeting will follow the second service at 12:30 p.m. Food will be served.

Forum: Kakenya’s Dream. Kakenya Ntaiya was predestined to live the life of a traditional Kenyan Maasai wife and mother, but she rebelled in favor of getting a good education. Now a graduate student working on her dissertation in international education, she is fulfilling her dream of enabling girls in her home community to get their own education at a school she founded that opened last year.

Music Notes: We welcome our Minister Emeritus with bells ringing as the Intergenerational Handbell Choir performs a brisk, uplifting tune; "Praise Ostinato."  The Italian word "ostinato" means repetitive and in this work for handbells you can hear the same four-note passage repeated many times over by our two highest bell ringers.  Gruppo Piccolo sings a delightful Shakespearean setting; "When Daffodils Begin to Peer," by the American jazz pianist, George Shearing.  Shearing chose a gently lilting style for these cheerful words of spring, which he plucked from Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale."  During the Offertory the ensemble sings the Italian madrigal "Il bianco e dolce cigno" from the 16th century Flemish renaissance composer, Jacob Arcadelt.  During the Anthem Gruppo Piccolo will sing a four part harmonization of the familiar hymn "Eternal Father Strong to Save," altering the voice distribution on each verse.

Welcome, Visitors to Cedar Lane. We invite you to stop by our Visitors Center in the Lounge service to say hello, find out more about Cedar Lane and Unitarian Universalism, sign up for our mailing list, and/or pick up pamphlets about our faith.

From the Ministers

Roger Fritts

When we first got the screen in the Auditorium back in September 2007, I thought about having movie nights ...  but I was not sure how to make them different then a regular movie theater, or how to make it appealing to those who are fond of sitting at home watching movies on their television. The Snark Ensemble Performance at church Saturday, April 17, 8:00 p.m., is I think, the answer to these questions.

This will be completely different from the experience of watching a movie in a theater or on your television at home because there will be live music accompaniment for the several vintage silent films. I am looking forward to it! It will be a wonderful social event for adults, children and grandchildren. Join us.

Susan Archer

What me, teach RE?  Well, why not?
But I'm gone once a month . . . Not to worry, we can put you on a team with folks who will cover. But I don't know enough about Unitarian Universalism or religion . . . Not to worry, you and the kids will learn together.  And, the biggest lessons will be learning about oneself and one another and being part of a classroom community. But I don't want to miss the adult worship service . . . That's one of the advantages of having 2 services!  But if it doesn't work to stay for the service as well as teach, we can provide a sub or a team member who can cover for you in class from time to time.  We all need that adult service sustenance from time to time and we want to support you in getting that. But the kids won't like me . . . I've been doing this a pretty long time (gosh, almost 29 years!) and rarely has this come up.  Listen to them, love them, and they will do the same.  And, we have lots of master teachers in our program who are great at helping figure out what to do if there is any kind of problem!

I and the RE Council invite you to think about giving in this way.  Most of our teachers would say that they get a lot more than they give!  You will get whatever support we can give to you, curriculum to guide you, a team of adults (and, for some with a teen assistant) to enjoy being a part of!  Send me a note, call, or stop by the Teacher Recruitment table during the last two Sundays in April for more conversation about whether this is the right opportunity for you.

We Care

The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs – food deliveries, rides to doctor’s appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by “neighborhoods”; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your nametag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood.

Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Roger Fritts at rfritts@cedarlane.org. All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team.

Music Notes from the Director of Music

April 11 - Gruppo Piccolo and the Intergenerational Handbell Choir will be on hand to support Minister Emeritus, Rev. Kenneth Maclean on this special morning.  The IG Handbell Choir will ring an energetic and joyous selection titled Praise Ostinato.  Gruppo Piccolo will sing the hymn “Eternal Father Strong to Save” a capella from the front of the Sanctuary.  The ensemble will offer additional chamber selections during the service.  The Congregation will sing “Spacious Firmament On High” and “O God, Our Help in Ages Past.”

April 18 - Our Children’s Choir and Youth Choir join together for a very special moment during this Worship Service.  You’ll have to come and see it for yourselves because it’s a secret (shh!).

April 25 - We will celebrate Earth Day with songs that remind us of the beauty and sacredness of our planet.  The Adult Choir leads the morning’s music with a setting by contemporary composer Frank Tichelli titled EarthSong.  The Congregation will sing “For the Earth Forever Turning.”

Don’t forget to check out all the extracurricular music happenings at CLUUC this spring!  “Round Singing” is part of Adult Programs.   Spring B will include both a class called “Everything You Need to Know About Handbells (but were afraid to ask...)” and a Coffee House project led by Steve Jones.  Check them all out on the website.

“The Greening of Unitarian Universalism”

The Rev. Roger Fritts
An Earth Day sermon celebrating the ways we are learning to live in harmony with the environment.

Around the Church

So, What Is a Child Dedication?
Most religious traditions have a way to welcome young ones into the faith community.  In Christian circles the rite of Baptism cleanses the child of sin and purifies.  We do not have that meaning in our Unitarian Universalist ceremonies welcoming our babies and young children.  We affirm that a baby arrives without sin or shame, as a whole and good person.  Our service of “child dedication” allows us (parents, family, friends, church) to promise to the child and to each other that we will love and nurture her or him, that we will teach the best of what we know.  We are not dedicating the child to any belief or cause, but are instead dedicating ourselves to this responsibility of raising a child.

On Sunday, June 6, we will take time to have a dedication ceremony within the regular worship service (10 a.m. summer schedule).  If you wish to be part of this, please contact Rev. Susan Archer(301-493-8300 x 206 or sarcher@cedarlane.org).

The Auction-Swing Into Spring Auction Recap
Those who attended the March 13 auction enjoyed themselves! The food was delicious and the fellowship most pleasant. Some terrific items were auctioned, including condos in Hawaii and Colorado, handyman services, rides to the airport, dinners of every imaginable variety, yard and garden cleanup, children’s books, jewelry, and much more—and there were some real bargains to be had. While the auction committee found ways to reduce expenses by roughly $1000 this year, the number of donations was down sharply from 2009, and consequently, the net to the church was several thousand less than in 2009. That, of course, was a disappointment.

To those of you who donated items—a big THANK YOU! To those of you purchased items—a big THANK YOU! To those of you who volunteered to help at the auction—a big THANK YOU!

The auction committee is reviewing all aspects of the auction to see how we can make it an even better event next year. If you have thoughts on that topic, email or call Auction Chair Brian Belanger (radiobelanger@comcast.net or 301-258-0708).

A few auction items are still available for purchase. Contact Sara Deshler in the church office (sdeshler@cedarlane.org or 301-493-8300) if you are interested. Item numbers and brief descriptions are provided below. Annual Meeting this Sunday
Join us April 11 at 12:30 for the Annual Meeting. We will serve food from the Lebanese Taverna.  All Cedar Lane members who have signed the book by October of 2009 are eligible to vote at the meeting. We will be electing new members of the board as well as of the Social Justice Council, discussing the state of our finances, and there will be an update from the Breakthrough Task Force regarding their exciting process to of soliciting church-wide input into creating an inspiring new vision for our church and goals and action items that support that vision.  We need a quorum to make any of our votes valid.  Please attend!

Concerts at Cedar Lane presents the Snark Ensemble, Saturday evening, April 17, 8 p.m. View the silent films of Buster Keaton, Charlie Chase, and Harry Langdon while listening to the live, New Orleans style original music of The Snark Ensemble.   Great entertainment for the whole family.  We’ll have popcorn, just like at the theatres.  Come early to get a good seat! See more details at cedarlane.org/Concerts.htm.

Donate Clothing!
Now that winter finally seems to be on its way out, please consider bringing in clothes for all seasons (any condition) that you and your family no longer need.  This is a project of the Session II 7th graders—we are working with Promicrofinance, a group that ships clothes to the Congo, where women (many of whom are trying to get out of violent or abusive situations) use them to begin their own businesses.  The box is near the side door in the hallway leading to the chapel.  We’ll be collecting until RE classes end on April 25.  Thank you!

Upcoming Potluck Dinner
The Ethical Eating Study Group invites you to another Plant-Based Food Potluck Dinner on Sunday, May 2.  The dinner starts at 6 p.m.  At 7 Don Robertson, Director of Earthsave Baltimore, will challenge us to make smarter food choices.  Don was scheduled to speak at our last potluck in February, but we cancelled him due to the weather.  We went ahead with the dinner though and had a wonderful time with terrific food.  Join us this time.  RSVP to Joanne Evans, joanneevans@verizon.net, 301-881-2616.

Great News for healthy eating!  Farm stand and CSA pickups at Cedar Lane to begin May 1.   The Keckler’s Orchard Country farm stand that was located for several years at the Woodmont Triangle is relocating to our upper parking lot on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.  CSA orders will also be available for pick up then.  Information  about signing up for the CSAs may be found at www.orchproduce.com

From their website:

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture.  CSAs help the community by providing fresh, local produce to consumers.  CSAs also help farmers by guaranteeing them a market for their products and eliminating the guesswork from marketing.  Shareholders (folks like you) subscribe for up to 3 seven week plans.  All subscriptions are due before the first week of each new plan.  This system helps us to know how much to plant and it allows consumers to rest easy knowing that they will receive fresh products each week throughout the growing season

Our agreement with the Kecklers includes two wonderful opportunities for Cedar Lane.

1-All Cedar Laners receive a discount if they order a share in that they will be eligible to get their produce at the reduced preseason rate. When completing the form please indicate that you are a Cedar Lane member.

2-The other great gift they are giving us is contributions of vegetables for Martha’s Table.  If you are interested please sign up soon as spots are limited.  Questions? Please contact Sara Deshler, sdeshler@cedarlane.org or David Yano, long time satisfied customer of Orchard Country.

1. If you will be able to come. We would like you to bring a dish: finger food after first the first service, or a dish for lunch after second service. Please bring and label your food as: vegetarian, vegan, organic, or regular.

2. If you can help plan, execute, and/or clean up after either of the celebrations. We hope that many people will become involved in planning and carrying out the celebrations.

To sign up to come or to help, come to the Environmental Talk Force table in the lounge, or contact Molly Hauck at mollyhauck@gmail.com or (301) 949-0178.

Cedar Lane's April 25 Sunday church Service will honor the Earth.  The Environmental Task Force invites you to celebrate Cedar Lane's accreditation as a GREEN SANCTUARY in the lounge following each service.  In the afternoon of April 25, Unitarians will rally on the Mall between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. to call attention to the energy-security legislation presently before Congress which caps global warming pollution and helps toward a transition to a clean energy economy. Carpools to the metro will be available.  In March 2004, our congregation voted that the environment and global warming/climate change are our primary concerns.  April 23 is the 40th celebration of Earth Day, and we can honor this event by being good stewards of our planet and by using energy wisely.

And Beyond Cedar Lane

From Beacon House
We have a chance to win $5,000 if we get more online votes for our “Young Women on the Rise” programs (i.e., young women’s empowerment programs and the cheerleading team) than 9 other competitors.  At a minimum, please copy and paste the link below and vote for “Beacon House”.  But please also be aggressive in getting anyone you can think of to vote for Beacon House as well.  Voting is open until April 22.  You can only vote once.
