Service This Sunday: 9 & 11 a.m. April 18, 2010
"When is a Branch a Snake?"
Rev. Roger
Fritts
The sermon will explore risk assessment and the power of fear.
Forum:
How Will the
Merger of Walter Reed and Bethesda Naval Hospital Affect Us? As
a result of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process,
Walter Reed will be closed, with most of its support for
military personnel and dependents transferred to the Bethesda
Naval Hospital. Visits to the Bethesda facility are projected to
almost double. The transfer raises issues of traffic congestion,
transit access, lodging for patients and visitors, and housing
for additional medical staff. Phil Alperson, BRAC Coordinator
for Montgomery County, will explore the impact of this change on
Cedar Lane.
Music Notes:
Our Children's Choir and Youth Choir join together for a very
special surprise during this Worship Service. You'll have to
come and see it for yourselves because it's a secret (shh!).

From the Ministers

GREAT THINGS TO DO:
This
Saturday night April 17, 8:00 P.M. I will be at
church to hear The
Snark Ensembleplay
and to watch old movies. I hope to see you there.
A week later
The Reverend Peter
Morales, President of the Unitarian Universalist
Association, invites us to join him Saturday, April 24, 2010
from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of
Annapolis 333 Dubois Road, Annapolis. Annapolis is beautiful
this time of year. It will be a great way to spend a Saturday.
(There will be a pitch for money. We will be asked to support
Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry of Maryland.) Please
RSVP by April 19 to
info@uulmmd.org
or Call 410-266-8044, ext. 111.
Two weeks from now, Saturday,
May 1 at 5:00P.M.
I will be at the first
Cedar Lane Derby
Day party. This will be THE adult social event
of the season at Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church! The
Finance Committee will serve Mint Juleps and appetizers before
the race, which we will watch on the big screen.
Horse racing is one of my favorite sports because it requires me
to pay attention for only about two minutes. "Post time," the
moment the race starts, is about 6:15 P.M. By 6:20, the race is
over and we can focus on food and socializing.
The food will include spiraled ham, angel biscuits, mushroom
stroganoff, and other dishes prepared by members of the Finance
Committee. Dessert will be Derby Pie (chocolate pecan), racing
cookies and fruit. Sometime after 8:00 P.M., we will all work
together to set up for church and spring B Sunday morning.
If you wish to attend, contact Sara Deshler
sdeshler@cedarlane.org to arrange the ticket purchase. The
cost is only $35.
So, in addition to Sunday morning, there are three opportunities
on the weekends to be with other Unitarian Universalists: Music
and movies, politics and Annapolis, horse racing and food-never
a dull moment. |

We Care
The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out
to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's
appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar
Lane congregation is organized geographically by
"neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson
to coordinate support. Look at your nametag or the map in the
church office to find your neighborhood.
Should you know of a member of our community in personal need,
you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this
person wishes to receive a response from the church, please
contact Roger Fritts at
rfritts@cedarlane.org.
All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so you are also
encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team. |

Music Notes from the Director of Music
Henry
Sgrecci

Our Children's Choir and Youth Choir join together for a very
special surprise during this Worship Service. You'll have to
come and see it for yourselves because it's a secret (shh!).

CLUUC this spring! "Round Singing" is part
of Adult Programs. Spring B will include both a class called
"Everything You Need to Know About Handbells (but were afraid to
ask...)" and a
Coffee House

From the Church Administrator
B & B Anyone?
From time to time we receive requests for Cedar Laners to open
their homes to UUs from other areas. They may be draw here with
a need at NIH or the Bethesda Naval Hospital, to visit family
nearby, or to attend a protest downtown. I am looking to
establish a roster of folks willing to be asked ( you may, of
course, decline if it is at an inconvenient time). If you are
interested please let me know. Thanks, Sara Deshler

Education for All Ages
Last Regular Classes April 25
We'll conclude this year's regular class program on April 25,
and dive into Spring B. We cannot adequately express our
gratitude to our very dedicated, talented, and loving teachers
who have given so much of themselves to be with our children and
youth! It's been a great year!
Teacher Recruitment in Full Swing
Our ministry to children and youth takes place in many ways.
Central to that is our regular September-April class program for
Babies-High Schoolers. Teaching most always is a rewarding and
satisfying experience (ask our teachers about this!). It is also
critical to our commitment to our faith community. Please think
about it! If you want to explore this a bit, to see if this
would be a good fit for you, learn what is needed, what subject
areas and age groups are available, please contact Susan Archer,
our Minister of Religious Education. Without teachers, we cannot
have classes! And, teaching may give you a surprising new window
for your own life.
Spring B Almost Here!
This fun and relaxed intergenerational program is offered for
all ages on Sunday mornings, May 2-May 23, with childcare
available for ages 5 and younger. Registration begins THIS
SUNDAY. The brochure describing class offerings is available
on-line at
www.cedarlane.org.
Hard copy brochures will also be available at the registration
table on Sundays, April 18 & 25, under the nametags, and the RE
Admin table downstairs. Contact the RE office if you need a copy
snail mailed.
All-Church Retreat Opening Registration
Our retreat, June 11-13,. will again this year, be at Camp
Tockwogh, Retreating is a time to breathe and play or do nothing
at all. The weekend is family centered in a beautiful setting by
the bay. It will be extraordinarily relaxing, and a way to make
new friends and deepen old relationships, find alone time and
space or participate in lots of activities-waterfront (kayaks
and other), pool, archery, hikes, campfire, . . . and more. For
all ages, babies through 110!
Registration materials will be mailed to RE families this coming
week, will be available on the website, and will be available in
hard copy on the counter under the nametags!

Around the Church
Concerts at Cedar Lane presents the Snark Ensemble, Saturday
evening, April 17, 8 p.m. View
the silent films of Buster Keaton, Charlie Chase, and Harry
Langdon while listening to the live, New Orleans style original
music of The Snark Ensemble. Great entertainment for the whole
family. We'll have popcorn, just like at the theatres. Come
early to get a good seat! See more details at cedarlane.org/Concerts.htm.
So, What Is a Child Dedication?
Most religious traditions have a way to welcome young ones into
the faith community. In Christian circles the rite of Baptism
cleanses the child of sin and purifies. We do not have that
meaning in our Unitarian Universalist ceremonies welcoming our
babies and young children. We affirm that a baby arrives without
sin or shame, as a whole and good person. Our service of "child
dedication" allows us (parents, family, friends, church) to
promise to the child and to each other that we will love and
nurture her or him, that we will teach the best of what we know.
We are not dedicating the child to any belief or cause, but are
instead dedicating ourselves to this responsibility of raising a
child.
On Sunday, June 6, we will take time to have a dedication
ceremony within the regular worship service (10 a.m. summer
schedule). If you wish to be part of this, please contact Rev.
Susan Archer(301-493-8300 x 206 or
sarcher@cedarlane.org).
Upcoming Potluck Dinner
The Ethical Eating Study Group invites you to another
Plant-Based Food Potluck Dinner on Sunday, May 2. The dinner
starts at 6 p.m. At 7 Don Robertson, Director of Earthsave
Baltimore, will challenge us to make smarter food choices. Don
was scheduled to speak at our last potluck in February, but we
cancelled him due to the weather. We went ahead with the dinner
though and had a wonderful time with terrific food. Join us this
time. RSVP to Joanne Evans,
joanneevans@verizon.net, 301-881-2616.
Music Committee
The Music Committee needs some new committee members for next
year to work with Henry Sgrecci to nurture and expand the CLUUC
Music Program. This is an opportunity to collaborate with a fun
group, exercise your creative and forward thinking, and make
real contributions to our church community. We are looking for
some new committee members who are not currently involved in any
of our church choirs, as well as some new members from the adult
choir. We meet every 2 months or as needed.
Our mission: The Music Committee, in conjunction with
the Director of Music, actively supports and facilitates the
operation of all aspects of the CLUUC music program, as well as
overseeing long-term goals and direction. The Committee
promotes communication among the congregation, choirs,
ministers, and the Board of Trustees (BOT) regarding the role of
music in our worship and congregational life.
If you are interested, or have any questions please contact
Ariel Mora, committee chair -

door in the hallway leading to the chapel. We'll be collecting
until RE classes end on April 25. Thank you!

GREEN TIPS
Environmental Task Force
COMPOSTING FOODS WITH FATS/OILS CAUSES PROBLEMS
Since rats and other "smalls" such as squirrels love the smell
of fats or oils, it is unwise to put foods prepared with fats or
oils into a compost pile or bin such as we have at CLUUC. These
bins have holes designed to circulate air but which also release
attractive odors. These rodents can and do chew through plastic
bins to get at what they love to eat. Oils or fats smell
wonderful to them; rotting, other composting things usually do
not smell so good. Most compost bins (like ours) are not
regularly monitored to chase such undesirables away. |
