Refugee Support

Thank you refugee support ministry teamDonations from Cedar Lane members and friends during a donation drive in December 2016.

Cedar Lane’s Refugee Support Ministry Team supports refugees who are in this country legally with official refugee status, primarily from the Middle East and also from Africa and Asia. The refugees have permission to work and some short-term governmental assistance. To achieve refugee status, the individuals and families have been in imminent danger in their home countries.

Cedar Lane’s Refugee Support Ministry Team is part of an interfaith consortium - Montgomery County Interfaith Refugee Resettlement Neighbors (MCIRRN) - of churches, mosques, and synagogues that helps newly-arrived families transition in this geographic area. Efforts include teaching English, supplying basic items, transportation, and helping connect these new neighbors with housing, employment, and other useful services. The goal of MCIRRN is to have the families they work with, achieve independence as soon as possible.

Church members and refugee families connect at tutoring sessions, welcoming events, and other times as are beneficial for the families’ needs.

To join this team, send an email to Kay Gottesman and ask to be put on the RSMT listserv.

To participate in tutoring contact Barbara Norland.

Shopping with the Ali Family
Look for the Cedar Lane Community Store in the lounge for the next three Sundays with non-perishable food and household items to select and purchase for Cedar Lane's Refugee Family. There are also "gift cards" available to buy directly with cash or checks. The family is very grateful for all of Cedar Lane's support. This month we are helping them prepare paper work for their green cards and receiving medical and dental care. Yousef has received a new bed to replace his broken one, Fatima has a sewing machine donated by a generous Cedar Lane member, and the ladies in the family receive weekly English tutoring.
