Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church will host a community vigil and press conference for Rosa I. Gutiérrez Lopez on Wednesday, March 20 at 11:30 am. Doña Rosa, who fled violence and harassment in El Salvador in 2005 has taken sanctuary at Cedar Lane since December 2018 to avoid being deported and being permanently separated from her three U.S.-born children.
Doña Rosa, after years of annual check-ins with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement until 2017 when she was given an ankle monitor, Federal agents intensified their enforcement to the point of ordering her to return with an airline flight back to El Salvador. She bought the airline ticket but decided not to self-deport, as ordered by ICE, out of worry for the welfare of her children and her own safety if she returned to El Salvador.
The 40-year-old mother of three children under the age of 11, including one with Down Syndrome, sought help in the community. DMV Sanctuary Congregation Network helped her find sanctuary at Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church. Doña Rosa has been waiting for due process to allow her to be reunited with her children, and the system has dealt her another disappointing blow.
Please join us for a community vigil with religious leaders, elected officials, and caring community members as we hear the latest updates on Doña Rosa’s case and pray for her to be reunited permanently with her children in the US.
The vigil is being organized by Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church and the DMV Sanctuary Congregation Network. For more information, please contact Rev. Abhi Janamanchi at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 727-667-3398.
