Ila White Deshler died on May 5, 2018, at age 97, and is mother to Cedar Lane's former Executive Director, Sara Deshler. She is survived by her four children, Nancy Katherine Deshler Gould (Robert), Sara Deshler, Andrew Deshler (Joanne), and Stephen Deshler; nine grandchildren and three great grandsons. Her husband of 71 years, Walter Deshler died in August 2016.
Raised in Oxford, Ohio, she lived with Walter in University Park, MD for 45 years until their move to Riderwood Village in 2006. She also lived with Dr. Deshler in England and East Africa while he conducted geographic research. Whether raising a two year old in the Kenyan bush or handling four kids in Kampala for a year, Ila pulled it off with her own quiet charm. After raising her children, she earned her Master's degree in ancient history and worked in several positions. A wonderful host and involved and supportive grandmother, she joined in Walter's wine making hobby while pursuing her own interests in literature, theater, music, needlework, cooking and baking.
