About the film:

I Am Not Your Negro is a 2016 documentary directed by Raoul Peck, based on James Baldwin's unfinished manuscript Remember This House. Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, the film explores the history of racism in the U.S. through Baldwin's reminiscences of civil rights leaders Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as his personal observations of American history. It was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 89th Academy Awards and won the BAFTA Award for Best Documentary.

About the Social Justice Film Series:

Together Diversity in collaboration with the Environmental Justice Ministry at Cedar Lane is pleased to invite you to our 2019-2020 Social Justice Film Series held on the 3rd Friday of each month, September - June. It is our hope that, through these films, we can learn to better understand one another recognizing the inherent worth and value of, not only every person, but of every sentient creature and every living and non-living segment of the amazing, incredible interdependent web to which we all owe our existence and of which we are all a part.

Knowing that we are all deeply interconnected still leaves us struggling daily towards that deep rooted understanding of how we can do the most effective good, recognize the most urgent need, take the most efficacious, least harmful action in our complex world. Through this season’s films we hope to explore these questions, learn of possibilities, and share rich discussions that may bring us closer to one another and perhaps even to the discovery of actions and activities we may join in that tilt the scale of justice towards equity, balance, and harmony.

On a less esoteric note, our film series will continue our tradition of vegan and vegetarian pot luck beginning at 6:30 pm every third Friday of each month from September through June (no film in December). The film showings will start promptly at 7 pm followed by facilitated discussions ending at 9:30 pm. We encourage everyone to bring a dish or make a small contribution towards the continuance of this program. Additionally, we deeply appreciate a short period of clean up assistance between the film and the discussion. The films are shown in the lounge at 9601 Cedar Lane, Bethesda, MD. At most events, we will provide child care but check as details of each film are posted.

This is a collaborative film series and will include films featuring racial justice, LGBTQ+ and women’s justice, immigration justice, and environmental justice. Each month’s program details will be posted on Facebook and in several other venues. Please contact with other places where you would like us to post the film series each month as well as any questions you might have. We look forward to your company as we enjoy these films and to your voices in our discussions.
