How, during an unprecedented pandemic, can we educate all children equitably -- with closed schools, disruptions in food assistance, and lack of internet access for home-learning affecting some more than others? How can we not, and serve the common good?

Former U.S. Secretary of Education, Dr. John B. King, Jr., will address the needs and possibilities for accessible, equitable educational opportunities for low-income or otherwise marginalized children and youth as a moral imperative on Wednesday, August 26, 2020, 7:00-8:30 pm, in a Zoom event sponsored by Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church.

Dr. King, whom President Obama called “an exceptionally talented educator,” one “committed to preparing every child for success,” has devoted his professional life to education as a teacher, principal, school system leader, and advocate. He is the president and CEO of The Education Trust, a national nonprofit that seeks to identify and close opportunity and achievement gaps from preschool through college. Inspired by his parents, who were public school educators in New York City, but orphaned as a pre-teen, he credits caring, challenging teachers with saving his life and giving him hope for the future.

Dr. King’s presentation, on an issue of critical importance to our democracy, and one particularly timely in Maryland and Montgomery County.

The Kiplinger Lecture on Ethics in American Society, now in its 20th year, was made possible by a generous gift from the Kiplinger Foundation in memory of Willard M. Kiplinger, an early member of Cedar Lane and the founder of The Kiplinger Washington Letter.

This annual lecture aims to promote a wider consciousness and a deeper understanding of concepts and questions of ethics and morality and to move individuals to apply that understanding in their lives.
